Critical Perspectives on Development Practice and Research (University of Calgary DEST 591)

Senior Development Studies students offer the knowledge and methods needed to conceptualize, design, implement and effectively manage community development research. Students work in teams of 2-4 to carry out a small community development-related project for non-profit partners during the 12 week term. Students will apply skills and knowledge related to community development and the practical implications of development issues as they exist in the community, focused on organizations working with "disadvantaged" or "marginal" groups or global issues (note – projects cannot include direct fundraising). Instructor: Caesar (Rowland) Apentiik Projects related to this course:

  • Will include local or international community development organizations (but with relevant staff here in Calgary)
  • Will include a development issue related to community development such as poverty, social justice, migration, food security, the environment or a related developmental challenge
  • Could include strategic planning, evaluation, research (i.e. surveys, interviews, focus groups), literature reviews and recommendations, development of measurement tools, and similar methodologies
  • Must be able to support students in identifying and contacting any research participants and support process accordingly
  • Must be able to be completed in 10-12 weeks with 2-4 part-time students (approx 3-5 hours/week/student)
Public Relations Management (Mount Royal University - COMM 3847)

This course explores the fundamentals of public relations planning. Seasoned third year students begin with theory and case study analysis and then work in teams (of 4-5) to develop, implement and evaluate your non-profit organization's public relations event, project or campaign. These student teams conduct research, analyze target audiences and messages to be delivered, undertake budgeting and scheduling of activities, and evaluate the results guided by your organizational supervisor, and their instructor. Projects must be able to be completed within a scope from February to the end of March. Instructor: Allison MacKenzie Examples of suitable projects include:

  • Planning/implementing fundraising events
  • Alumni events
  • Charitable auctions
  • Community engagement
  • Marketing Campaigns
Strategic Human Resources Management (Mount Royal University HRES 5101)

Fourth year students examine the overall role and functions of human resource management in relation to an organization's strategic planning process. Projects must be within a scope that they can be completed in 8-12 weeks from late January to mid-March. Instructor: Susan Quinn Examples of suitable projects include:

  • Analyzing and developing policies
  • Creating a training and development plan and/or specific training modules
  • Developing a strategic plan for HR
  • Developing a recruitment strategy
  • Conducting a compensation analysis
  • Examining performance appraisal processes
  • Recommendations for improving motivation
