Canadian Code for Voluntary Involvement
The Canadian Code for Volunteer Involvement was originally launched in December 2000 as kick-off for 2001 The International Year of Volunteers. Across Canada, many organizations worked to adopt and implement the Code into their work with volunteers and in doing so, created a solid base for involving volunteers in their organizations.
The second version of the Code is an evolution of the original and was revised and updated by Volunteer Canada, in partnership with CAVR (Canadian Administrators of Volunteer Resources) and in association with professionals from the voluntary sector. As such, the revised version of the Code continues to focus on the strengths of the original Code: the values for volunteer involvement, the principles for volunteer involvement, and updated organizational standards while also ensuring that organizations can continue to ensure that solid foundations are in place.
Organizations that have already adopted the Code will therefore not need to repeat their efforts. Any work that has been done to date is relevant and important. We do however encourage these organizations to review the updated Organizational Standards.
Volunteer Calgary believes strongly in the foundation that the Code can provide to organizations that adopt and implement it. In addition, Volunteer Calgary values the role the Code plays in facilitating discussions between board of directors, Executive Directors and Managers of Volunteers about the vital and important role of volunteers in our society. By adopting the Code, organizations are sending a strong message that they value the work that volunteers do on their behalf.
