News Release: Leadership Awards Winners Announced

(Calgary, AB – April 17, 2012) Volunteer Calgary announced the recipients of the 16^th Annual Leadership Awards in a gala held on the evening of April 17.

The Leadership Awards, the premier volunteer recognition event in Calgary, marked the culmination of a year-round nomination period. Twelve award recipients were selected out of 99 nominations received across eight award categories, which represent the diversity of volunteers serving in various capacities and providing essential community services.

The award recipients are as follows: Ashid Kumar Bahl for the Heart of Calgary Award; Renee Fleming of the Calgary Zoo for the Leader in Volunteer Management Award; Leaders in Employee Volunteering Award: Penn West Exploration, First Calgary Financial, TELUS; Volunteer Family Award: Johnson Family - Garth, Kathryn, Connor, Teague; Leaders of Tomorrow Award: Sheliza Kassam for the Senior High Category, Michelle D’Souza for the Junior High Category, Riley Beatty for the Elementary Category; Calgary Public Library for the Leader in Volunteer Engagement Award; Priscilla Popilchak for the Volunteer in Profile Award; and finally, Catfish the Horse for the Volunteer Animal Award.

The gala was held at the Stampede Park’s BMO Centre with close to 500 guests, comprised of individuals from the non-profit sector, corporate sector, local government and volunteers, displaying the community’s strong support for volunteerism. Premier Alison Redford gave a brief address to kick off the celebration.

“I understand there are about a hundred people nominated for these awards and that is just a tremendous representation of who we are as Albertans. Thank you so much for continuing to add to the quality of life in our province,” said Premier Alison Redford.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the awards to the award recipients, which was preceded by short films featuring their volunteer work. The Heart of Calgary Award recipient, Ashid Kumar Bahl, had dedicated his life to helping children all over the world and left inspiring words for everyone.

“Truly life is not really about us. It's about making life happen for somebody else who is less fortunate than us. In that lies the true significance of living -- always remember that,” said Bahl in his acceptance speech.

“Everybody in this world is looking for something. Some people are looking for wealth, some people are looking for happiness, some people are even looking for god, but in the midst of helping these children, I found everything. I hope you do, too. “

The Leadership Awards also launched National Volunteer Week (NVW) celebrations in Calgary which runs from April 15 to 21. NVW is a nationwide effort held yearly to honour all volunteers across Canada.

Volunteer Calgary has played a key role in the development of volunteerism in Calgary for over 50 years. Its mission is leading, promoting, connecting and strengthening volunteerism. Through its services and programs, it enhances the ability of approximately 440 non-profit member organizations to manage volunteers and links Calgarians with unique volunteer opportunities.

According to a recently released survey, the number of Canadians who volunteer increased to 13.3 million -- that means we have even more reason to celebrate!

Calgary Celebrates Volunteer Nominees

All volunteers deserve to be applauded and today, Volunteer Calgary did just that announcing the nominees for the 16^th Annual Leadership Awards.

The event held at Cardel Theatre provided an opportunity for the nominated volunteers, their nominators, and community members to celebrate the importance of volunteerism in the community.

“Volunteerism is the lifeblood of the non-profit sector,” said Jamie Niessen, President & CEO of Volunteer Calgary. “We wanted hold a special event that will acknowledge everyone’s efforts, not just those who win the awards.”

This year, 99 nominations were received by Volunteer Calgary across eight categories: Heart of Calgary, Leaders of Tomorrow, Leaders in Employee Volunteering, Leader in Volunteer Management, Leader in Volunteer Engagement, Volunteer Family, Volunteer in Profile, and Volunteer Animal. The nominees represent the commitment, passion and diversity of the thousands of volunteers in Calgary who work behind the scenes to build a stronger and healthier community.

“It’s so great to recognize people who are doing so much for the city. Calgary is such a caring community. I am grateful to Volunteer Calgary for recognizing volunteers,” said Jack Neuefeld, a lifelong Calgary volunteer who was nominated for the Heart of Calgary Award.

“It’s an exciting event and such an honour to be in the presence of so many people who are passionate about volunteering,” said Jessica Williams who was nominated for Leader in Volunteer Management for her work with Catholic Family Service.

Final award winners in each category will be announced at the Leadership Awards gala on April 17, 2012. The ceremony will also kick off National Volunteer Week celebrations in Calgary, which will run from April 15 - 21.

Calgarians are encouraged start volunteering by finding local volunteer opportunities on Volunteer Calgary’s website at www.volunteercalgary.ab.ca.

International Volunteer Day: Majority of Calgarians committed to the spirit of volunteerism

December 5, 2011, Monday – International Volunteer Day (IVD) is a special day designated by the United Nations to celebrate and recognize the important and immeasurable contributions of volunteers around the world.

“Our latest Calgary statistics indicate almost 64% of Calgarians have volunteered in the last 12 months and 88% plan on volunteering in the next 12 months. Given these figures, Calgarians have plenty to celebrate,” says Jamie Niessen, President and CEO of Volunteer Calgary.

“International Volunteer Day is an opportunity to acknowledge and recognize the amazing work of volunteers around the globe and especially within our local communities.”

IVD initiatives worldwide are aimed at highlighting the importance of volunteers and their contributions in communities and encouraging more people to volunteer. They come in various forms –from grand volunteer recognition events and casual afternoon teas to volunteer projects like park clean-ups or tree-planting or donation sorts.

“We encourage all Calgarians to participate in celebrating this special day – either by thanking a volunteer, recognizing a volunteer, inspiring someone to volunteer or becoming a volunteer,” says Niessen.

On Monday, December 5, 2011, people from all around the world will unite to celebrate International Volunteer Day (IVD). There are many ways for you, your family and your friends to celebrate and support International Volunteer Day.

Ways to celebrate International Volunteer Day:

1. THANK A VOLUNTEER.

With over 12.5 million Canadians and 1.4 million Albertans who volunteer, chances are, you are directly impacted by the work of a volunteer or you know a person who volunteers. Write a “thank you” note, send an email, shake their hands, take them out to lunch, buy them coffee. Whatever you choose to do, it is important to let volunteers know that their work is highly valued. It’s the least you can do to support these local heroes.

Volunteer Calgary announces changes to library service

Volunteer Calgary today announced the end of its direct library service and the beginning of the development of non-profit management resources at the Calgary Public Library (CPL).

“Resources to support self-directed learning and development in non-profit management are important for our sector,” said Jamie Niessen, President and CEO, Volunteer Calgary. “Non-profit management resources will be available at the Calgary Public Library. This addresses key barriers identified in accessing our services, more service locations, more hours of service and more convenient hours of service.”

The move will enable Volunteer Calgary to focus on delivering the unique services that it is able to provide to the voluntary sector while allowing CPL staff to lend their expertise in sharing and further developing the collection. CPL will offer 18 service locations in the New Year and nearly twice as many hours of service each week. In addition, CPL will provide access to digital resources that Volunteer Calgary was unable to provide to members.

Volunteer Calgary will maintain a commitment to the acquisition of materials focused on non-profit management with a $25,000 donation to CPL over the next five years. This donation is equivalent to the existing materials acquisition budget and will be funded with the organization’s earned revenues.

“After discussions with our major funders, we were able to re-direct some $100,000 of funding to programs only Volunteer Calgary provides to the voluntary sector,” added Niessen. “We are grateful to all our staff and volunteers who served our member needs for so many years in the Library. We look forward to the availability of resources at CPL and the opportunity to reach and empower an even larger audience and engage Calgarians in ways to make our community stronger.”

This announcement is effective immediately. The current Volunteer Calgary Library has officially ceased its lending policy. Anyone wishing to return materials previously checked out can do so during regular office hours Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Volunteer Calgary offices located at 1170, 1202 Centre Street SE. All materials must be returned to Volunteer Calgary by December 6, 2011.

Volunteer Calgary’s mission is leading, promoting, connecting, and strengthening volunteerism. It has played a key role in the development of volunteerism in Calgary for 55 years. Through its services and programs, it enhances the ability of almost 400 member non-profit organizations to manage volunteers and links thousands of Calgarians with unique volunteer opportunities. Nominate for Volunteer Calgary's 16th Annual Leadership Awards

(Calgary, AB – November 14, 2011) Volunteer Calgary is currently seeking nominations for the 16^th Annual Volunteer Calgary Leadership Awards. The Leadership Awards recognizes the efforts of volunteers and organizations who work year-round to build a strong and vibrant Calgary. It is an opportunity for Calgarians to show their support and appreciation for the work that volunteers do.

"Every year, I am amazed at the stories we receive about volunteers in the city who are making a difference in the lives of others," says Karen Franco, Communications Director of Volunteer Calgary. “The Leadership Awards is a wonderful opportunity to share these stories and inspire more Calgarians to take an active part in the community.

Volunteer Calgary’s Leadership Awards recognizes outstanding volunteerism in the following award categories:

Heart of Calgary Award – honours an individual’s lifelong commitment to volunteering
Leaders of Tomorrow Award – honours volunteers in elementary, junior high and senior high
Leaders in Employee Volunteering Award – honours businesses promoting workplace volunteerism
Leader in Volunteer Management Award – honours professionals working volunteer services
Leader in Volunteer Engagement Award – honours a non-profit organization’s innovative volunteer program
Volunteer in Profile Award – honours an individual volunteer
Volunteer Family Award – honours a family that volunteers together
Volunteer Animal Award – honours an animal and its companion that has made a difference in the community

All qualified nominees will be acknowledged at the Leadership Awards Nominee Announcement event on January 31, 2012.

The award recipients in the above categories will be formally acknowledged and celebrated at Volunteer Calgary’s 16^th Annual Leadership Awards Gala on April 17, 2012 during National Volunteer Week (April 15 – 21).

Award recipients will receive a Leadership Awards signature blown glass art piece, an invitation to the exclusive VIP reception, and will be honoured at the Annual Leadership Awards gala. In addition, they will have their volunteer activities profiled in a promotional video, shown at the Annual Leadership Awards and featured on the Volunteer Calgary website during the upcoming year.

Volunteer Calgary urges all Calgarians to consider nominating a local volunteer from their communities, schools, churches or workplace. The deadline for nominations for the Leadership Awards is January 13, 2012. Nominations can be submitted online at www.volunteercalgary.ab.ca/leadershipawards.

Volunteer Calgary has played a key role in the development and promotion of volunteerism in Calgary for over 50 years. Calgary Organization will be unique in Non-Profit Sector

Calgary, AB (Nov 1, 2011) Volunteer Calgary and CentrePoint Non-Profit Management, today announced organizational changes that will create a unique capacity building organization to better serve the community and the non-profit sector.

Volunteer Calgary will officially assume delivery of all programs and services currently offered by CentrePoint effective January 1, 2012. This is a program and service acquisition; once the acquisition process is completed, CentrePoint will cease operations.

Volunteer Calgary and CentrePoint are working together on the transformation of a volunteer centre and centre for non-profit management into a new, hybrid organization uniquely positioned to build the effectiveness of local non-profit organizations to deliver service to the community.

The Volunteer Calgary Board of Directors are enthusiastic about this transformational change for Volunteer Calgary as it directly supports the existing vision of ‘People with passion and purpose leading the way to vibrant communities.’

“This change will increase the scope and impact of non-profit sector capacity building in Calgary and across the province while reducing the cost of the infrastructure to provide these services,” according to Jamie Niessen, President and CEO of Volunteer Calgary.

“This change is about providing better support to the sector, “ says Barb Ferguson, Chief Executive Officer for CentrePoint Non-Profit Management. “It is a positive change that will broaden the accessibility of capacity building programs and services.”

Volunteer Calgary, CentrePoint and their major funders have been and will continue to work diligently to ensure the current level of service from both organizations is maintained during the transition. Current Volunteer Calgary member organizations and CentrePoint clients can expect the organization to continue delivering its services as a volunteer centre and can look forward to additional, non-profit management services to be made available through Volunteer Calgary.

Volunteer Calgary staffer recognized in the Top 40 Under 40!

Calgary, Alberta, October 28, 2011 -- Volunteer Calgary is proud to announce that our Community Development Manager, Buffy St-Amand, was recognized last night as one of the city’s Top 40 Under 40. St-Amand joins the ranks of a select group of influential Calgarians who have been making their marks in their own professions and in our community, according to Avenue Magazine’s Top 40 Under 40.

“We are tremendously excited, but not surprised at Buffy’s recognition,” says Jamie Niessen, President and CEO of Volunteer Calgary. “Her personal commitment to making Calgary the best community it can be is only surpassed by her commitment to helping others find ways to make their community the best it can be.”

In her role with Volunteer Calgary, St-Amand is focused on leadership and capacity building throughout the community. It is no accident that the programs she manages and oversees are rooted in the development of leadership skills for individuals, organizations and non-profits.

St-Amand is currently managing several programs and is a driving force behind Volunteer Calgary’s newest initiative, the Community Service Learning program, which works with several accredited post-secondary institutions in Calgary to match highly skilled students to non-profit organizations with specific needs. This infusion of student power makes a real difference to the organization and the students often experience a ‘real life’ boost in their learning.

St-Amand also shares her expertise and passion for leadership development through Volunteer Calgary’s Leadership Calgary program, a community-based program which encourages existing and aspiring leaders to work collaboratively to build a healthy and caring community. Now in its 13^th year, Leadership Calgary continues to inspire community leaders to make a difference in our community. Since it began, 30 of the program’s alumni have appeared on the annual Top 40 lists.

Dear Members, Friends and Supporters,

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Marlene Mulligan to the role of Director, Resource Development. Marlene will officially step into this new role effective September 19, 2011.

In her previous role at Chevron Canada Resources, Marlene was responsible for community investment where she built strong, innovative community partnerships with many non-profit organizations, including Volunteer Calgary.

Marlene has been working in the field of business communications for 10 years both in Canada and abroad. Since her move to Calgary 5 years ago, she has been focusing on corporate community investment and employee volunteer and giving programs.

A native of Prince Edward Island, Marlene has a Bachelor's Degree in Commerce with a Minor in Economics from the University of Prince Edward Island and Public Relations Certificate from Mount Royal University.

Marlene is a graduate of Volunteer Calgary’s Leadership Calgary program, class of 2009, and remains an active volunteer with the program. She also applies her community investment and fundraising skills to her volunteer roles with several non-profits, including the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Cancer Society.

Prior to her work in Calgary, Marlene was a small business owner with a focus in marketing and a college instructor of business communications.

In her new role with Volunteer Calgary, Marlene will serve on the Leadership Team and bring a unique perspective on the ways resource development supports our vision of people with passion and purpose creating vibrant communities.

Do you have a Community Service Learning project?

Could your organization use assistance from a team of motivated and knowledgeable students?

From September to December 2011, a select number of students from the University of Calgary and Mount Royal University will be available to undertake short-term projects in Calgary through the Community Service Learning Program (CSL).

What is CSL? CSL is an educational partnership between a community organization (usually a non-profit organization) and a team from an educational institution comprised of an instructor and students, from which all parties benefit as they work on the project together and learn from each other.

What sorts of projects can the students do?Students perform a service for the community partner, which is related to the skills and knowledge that their field of studies provides. The project could be a community-based research or the provision of a customized service that the community needs. Some past projects have involved students in:

Conducting surveys
Developing websites
Completing personal interviews
Drafting a communications plan

How do you apply? If you are a Volunteer Calgary member organization and are interested in becoming a Community Service Learning Partner for the Fall of 201, please send an email to Buffy St. Amand. An information bulletin and a CSL Project Proposal form will be sent to interested parties. The deadline for CSL applications is August 15, 2011.

No projects for this fall? Another batch of students will be available for projects between January and April in 2012.

Calgary police are making it easier to get a Police Information Check by opening several new locations around the city for people to submit the applications.

Effective immediately, Calgarians can choose from seven locations to complete an application for a PIC:

The checks were previously only available at the CPS Administration Building downtown.

The new locations will allow citizens to apply for a PIC at more convenient locations with ample free parking.

To apply for a PIC:

Bring two pieces of government-issued identification. One must have a photo (i.e. driver's licence, passport, citizenship card). The other can be a social insurance card, healthcare card or birth certificate.
The cost is $30 and $15 for volunteers/unpaid practicums (with a letter from the organization). Payment can be made by AMEX, Visa, MasterCard or Interac. Cash is currently accepted at the Administration Building only.

It takes about two weeks to complete the check and all applications receive the same priority.

People who need Vulnerable Sector fingerprinting, pardon applicants, security guard/locksmith applicants or any out-of-city/country applicants will still be required to attend the Administration Building.

Volunteer Calgary Board Announces New President & CEO for organization

Calgary, AB (May 11, 2011) The Volunteer Calgary Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Jamie Niessen to the role of President & CEO of Volunteer Calgary. The announcement marks the completion of an extensive search and recruitment effort led by executive search firm Odgers Berndtson, in partnership with the Board of Directors. Niessen will officially assume the role on June 13, 2011.

"We attracted a strong list of candidates interested in leading Volunteer Calgary,” stated Dani DeBoice, Chair of the Board of Directors. "With Jamie's extensive experience in the not-for-profit sector, his vision, and his personal commitment to building a stronger community, the Board is confident he is the best person to lead Volunteer Calgary to becoming one of Canada's most innovative volunteer centres."

Niessen joins Volunteer Calgary from his post as Manager of Community Investment at TransCanada Corporation. He has strong connections with the not-for-profit and voluntary sector in Alberta through his professional work and also serves as a passionate community volunteer, including his current role as Chair of the Calgary Public Library Board. Niessen holds a Bachelor of Public Relations and has worked across Canada in a number of marketing communication roles in the corporate, government and voluntary sectors.

“I am tremendously excited about the opportunity to work for Volunteer Calgary,” said Niessen. “The organization has a long and proud history in this community and I am honoured to work with our staff, members, community partners and funders to lead Volunteer Calgary to continued success in our vision of creating vibrant communities.”

The appointment of Niessen will bring to a close the role of Interim CEO held by Sue Luciuk, Volunteer Calgary’s Director of Finance, who has been leading the day-to-day operations of the organization since November 2010.

“The Board is very grateful for the leadership and commitment Sue has demonstrated over the past six months," continued DeBoice. "With the support of the entire Volunteer Calgary team, her management has ensured Volunteer Calgary has been able to continue delivering exemplary programming, services and support to the members of Volunteer Calgary and the public at large."

Luciuk will resume her previous role of Director of Finance and will continue to manage the finances of the organization. Luciuk will help transition the management of the day-to-day operations to Niessen.

Volunteer Calgary Offers New Widgets for Searching Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Calgary is pleased to announce that we have three new widgets to offer to the general public, members and stakeholders to use on your website.

The widgets are intended to help connect Calgarians more effectively, to volunteer opportunities that need to be filled in the community. We currently have over 700 opportunities to search through, that span a variety of interests, commitment levels and types of volunteering.

The widgets allow users to conduct simple volunteer opportunity searches from any other website.

The widgets are offered in 3 sizes – Square: 300 x 300 pixels, Rectangle: 200 x 370 pixels and Banner: 700 x 115 pixels. Coding for each of the widgets, can be found underneath each widget, and work in a Javascript format.

Local volunteers receive prestigious award

(Calgary, AB – April 13, 2011) Lifelong volunteer and founder of Cancervive Calgary, Brian McGregor is the 2011 recipient of The Heart of Calgary Award. Volunteer Calgary celebrated McGregor’s commitment to the Calgary community along with 11 other award recipients last night at the 15^th Annual Leadership Awards Gala.

The young recipients of the Leaders of Tomorrow Awards stole the show as guests at the gala event were treated to inspiring videos featuring Jocelyn Davis (15), Rebecca Cyr (14) and 9 year old Stephen McPhee who each received an award in recognition of the volunteer work they have been doing in the community.

“No matter what life might throw at me, I feel solid and grounded inside. This is what volunteering does for me.” says Jocelyn Davis.

The Good Life Community Bicycle Shop was recognized with the Leader in Volunteer Engagement for its development of a unique program that engages volunteers at every level of the organization. The Calgary Distress Centre’s Karen Gallagher-Burt was honoured with the Volunteer Management Award for her work recruiting, managing and supporting over 300 volunteers who make it possible to operate the crisis phone lines 24/7-year round.

Polly and Robin Knowlton-Cockett accepted the Volunteer Family Award on behalf of their entire family, for many years of volunteering with numerous environmental initiatives. Howard Christianson who has been a volunteer driver for NeighbourLink Calgary every day for over 6 years, was given the Volunteer in Profile Award.

Other award recipients honoured at last night’s event included three local companies who are actively supporting their employees to volunteer at home and abroad; Sysco Calgary, HedKandi Salon and Dr Brad Krusky Pediatric Dentistry each received a Leaders in Employee Volunteering Award for their employee volunteer programs.

The Annual Leadership Awards are the premier volunteer recognition event in Calgary, with the twelve award recipients being selected from almost 100 nominations. The nominees represent a cross section of Calgary volunteers who work toward a common vision of a healthier and stronger community. The gala was held at the Stampede Park’s BMO Centre with approximately 550 people in attendance, displaying the community’s strong support for volunteerism.

The Leadership Awards is just one of hundreds of celebrations nationwide this week in recognition of National Volunteer Week (NVW) which runs from April 10-16, 2011. NVW is a nationwide effort held yearly to honours all volunteers across Canada.

As part of the nationwide celebrations surrounding National Volunteer Week April 10-16^th Volunteer Calgary is thrilled to have the honour to welcome the His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, to Calgary.

Upon his arrival at Volunteer Calgary, the Governor General will visit the Volunteer Calgary Library before taking some time to say a few words and meet with volunteers, and staff of Volunteer Calgary during a small reception. At that time His Excellency will also meet with the outstanding volunteers previously honoured by Volunteer Calgary during the Leadership Awards event held the night before at the BMO Centre in Calgary.

Calgary's current wait times for Police Information Checks and fingerprinting are the longest in Alberta. Volunteers are currently waiting 6-8 weeks for the Police Information Check portion. RCMP report fingerprint checks are taking upwards of two months. Learn More

Before her father was diagnosed, Theresa Acchione would've never put the two words, brain and tumour, together. She lost her father in 2000 to a cancerous brain tumour and since 2002, Theresa has been giving back to an organization that she says gave her and her family compassionate support.

The Volunteer Calgary Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Sue Luciuk to the role of Interim Chief Executive Officer of Volunteer Calgary. Luciuk, Director of Finance, has been leading the day to day operations of Volunteer Calgary since the departure of Volunteer Calgary’s former President and CEO was announced in November of last year.

This interim appointment, announced internally prior to Volunteer Calgary’s seasonal break, ensures the Volunteer Calgary team begins the New Year with a continued business as usual approach to the mission of leading, promoting connecting and strengthening volunteerism.

“The Board is confident the staff team in place has the appropriate skills and resources to continue delivering exemplary programming, services and support to the members of Volunteer Calgary and the public at large,” says Dani DeBoice, Volunteer Calgary Board Chair.

Volunteer Calgary’s Board of Directors is in the process of selecting a search firm to assist in recruitment of the best candidate to take on the role of President and CEO. The Board will update Volunteer Calgary members and stakeholders when a new President and CEO has been appointed.

For the most part, New Year’s resolutions around the globe look the same: to be healthier, to lose weight, to exercise more, to get rid of bad habits, to develop good ones, to learn more, to earn more, to do more, to make something of ourselves, to make a difference, and the list goes on. The be all and end all of all NY resolutions? To become a better person.

Calgary to host one of only four screenings of film outside US

Calgary, AB – On January 12, 2011, Leadership Calgary will proudly present“Race to Nowhere – The Dark Side of America’s Achievement Culture”, a film by Vicki Abeles. This special screening will take place at the Calgary Public Library, which is one of only 4 venues outside the United States to be screening the film on important issues surrounding youth and education today.

“As a community leadership program, Leadership Calgary aims to engage Calgarians in these types of dialogue, which creates the opportunity to discuss ways in which we can prepare our youth to strive towards a better future,” says Buffy St-Amand, Community Development Manager at Volunteer Calgary.

How to celebrate International Volunteer Day

On Sunday, December 5, 2010, people from all around the world will unite to celebrate International Volunteer Day (IVD). There are many ways for you and your family and friends to celebrate and support International Volunteer Day.

THANK A VOLUNTEER. With over 12.5 million Canadians and 1.4 million Albertans who volunteer, chances are, you are directly impacted by the work of a volunteer or you know a person who volunteers. Write a “thank you” note, send an email, shake their hands, take them out to lunch, buy them coffee. Whatever you choose to do, it is important to let volunteers know that their work is highly valued. It’s the least you can do to support these local heroes.

RECOGNIZE A VOLUNTEER. If you know a volunteer who has made a tremendous positive impact on the community or the lives of others, let everyone else know. Share their inspiring story with others by contacting media or by nominating them for an award.

BECOME A VOLUNTEER. The best form of appreciation is emulation! One of the best ways to participate in International Volunteer Day is by embarking on your own volunteer work. Most non-profit organizations that work to provide essential services to the community can benefit from your support. Grab your friends and family and start volunteering. INSPIRE OTHERS TO VOLUNTEER. If you are a volunteer, share your story with your friends, family and co-workers. Volunteers work continuously to provide essential services to the community.

International Volunteer Day: Uniting the world in celebration of volunteers December 5, 2010

December 5, 2010, Sunday - International Volunteer Day (IVD) is a special day designated by the United Nations to celebrate and recognize the important and immeasurable contributions of volunteers on a global scale. IVD was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985.

“We recognize the value and the impact of volunteers worldwide and right here in Calgary,” says Dani DeBoice, Board Chair for Volunteer Calgary.

2010 also marks the 10^th anniversary of the 2001 International Year of Volunteers. IYV+10 will be opportunity for people all around the world to join together once again in a global effort to recognize volunteers and volunteerism. International Volunteer Day is the start of this year-long celebration.

“We invite all Calgarians to take a moment on December 5^th and think about the volunteers who impact them on a daily basis – volunteers who do everything from delivering meals to needy seniors, coaching young athletes, organizing fundraising events for non-profit organizations, working in local community centres, sitting on volunteer boards, volunteering on political campaigns, and simply investing their time in building a stronger Calgary,” says DeBoice.

Around the world, IVD celebrations come in various forms - from volunteer recognition events and afternoon teas to park clean-ups and tree planting - all aimed at putting the spotlight on the valuable contributions of volunteers year-round.

When it comes to volunteering, Albertans have a reason to celebrate. The most recent Canada Survey of Giving, Volunteering, and Participating, estimated that 52% of Albertans are volunteering, higher than the national average of 48%.

In Calgary, the public are encouraged to use this day to show appreciation for volunteers as well as to begin thinking of ways that they can engage in their own volunteer work.

Calgarians are invited to visit www.volunteercalgary.ab.ca for ideas on how to celebrate IVD and to find interesting volunteer opportunities for themselves that will help build a strong community.

This month's Volunteer in Profile (VIP) has an incredible way of getting along with kids, and is using it to give back.

Sarah Tanouye has a very special skill.

As a volunteer for Sonshine Community Services, she is able to bring positive energy into the lives of children that are often full of chaos and sadness.

The Sonshine Centre houses women and their children who have experienced family violence and abuse.

Sarah's job is to play with the children every Tuesday night as the women essentially rebuild their lives. Read more.

After she lost her husband to cancer, Cecile Bengtsson wanted to look for a way to spend her free time. She found L'Arche Calgary, an organization that provides caring homes and programs for adults with developmental disabilities. Read more.

Volunteer Calgary Leadership Awards Winners Announced

(Calgary, AB – April 19, 2010) The long wait finally ended when Volunteer Calgary announced the recipients of the 14^th Annual Leadership Awards on the evening of April 19.

The Leadership Awards, the premier volunteer recognition event in Calgary, marked the culmination of the year-round nomination process. Twelve award recipients were selected out of a total of 124 nominations received across eight award categories. The nominees represent the broad range of volunteers who work toward a common vision of a healthier and stronger community.

The award recipients are as follows: Robert (Bob) Lang for the Heart of Calgary Award; Azmin Poonja of the Calgary Public Library for the Leader in Volunteer Management Award; Leaders in Employee Volunteering Award: Brookfield Properties (Large Business), Hopewell Residential Communities (Medium Business), Eligeo IT(Small Business); Margaret, Brock, Mitchell, Reid, and Lydia Cameron for the Volunteer Family Award; Leaders of Tomorrow Award: Omar Bainto for the Senior High Category, Tony Ducharme for the Junior High Category, Zafir Nagji for the Elementary Category; YWCA of Calgary for the Leader in Volunteer Engagement Award; John Labun for the Volunteer in Profile Award; and finally, Logan the English Retriever for the Volunteer Animal Award.

The gala was held at the Stampede Park’s BMO Centre with approximately 500 people in attendance, displaying the community’s strong support for volunteerism. The guests were comprised of individuals from the non-profit sector, corporate sector, local government and, of course, countless volunteers. The growing support from Calgary’s corporate sector was also seen through the continuous patronage of sponsors both longstanding and new.

“Suncor Energy is proud to participate in the recognition of the volunteer leaders who invest their time and expertise in a variety of roles and organizations that contribute to the well-being of society,” says Sue Lee, Senior Vice President, Human Resources and Communications from Suncor Energy who has been the presenting sponsor for the awards since 2003.

The evening was an opportunity to get-together with members of the community to simply celebrate volunteerism. The night's celebratory mood was set off with a powerful piece on the value of volunteers delivered by a local slam poet, followed by compelling videos of volunteerism in Calgary. Mayor Bronconnier also gave an address, recognizing the importance of volunteers in the city. The highlight of the event was the awards ceremony during which the winners each received an award and addressed the audience.

“These stories show just how much of a difference volunteers make in our city,” says Laurel Benson, President and CEO of Volunteer Calgary. “Calgary wouldn’t be the city that it is without them.”

The Leadership Awards also launched National Volunteer Week (NVW) celebrations in Calgary which runs from April 18 to 24. NVW is a nationwide effort held yearly to honour all volunteers across Canada.

Volunteer Calgary has played a key role in the development of volunteerism in Calgary for over 50 years. Its mission is leading, promoting, connecting and strengthening volunteerism. Through its services and programs, it enhances the ability of approximately 400 non-profit member organizations to manage volunteers and links thousands of Calgarians with unique volunteer opportunities.

Volunteers provide vital support to the community

Celebrate National Volunteer Week: April 18 – 24, 2010

Driving patients to appointments, planning a festival, being somebody’s big sister/brother, running a casino, packing nutritious lunches for kids, giving fashion advice to empower women, answering a distress call, providing a temporary home for a puppy -- these are only a handful of the thousands of services provided by volunteers on a day-to-day basis.

“National Volunteer Week is meant to officially celebrate the spirit of volunteerism that is so much a part of what makes us uniquely Canadian and decidedly Calgarian,”says Laurel Benson, President & CEO of Volunteer Calgary.

In Calgary, there are over 5,000 non-profit and charitable organizations, many of which depend on the support of volunteers in order to fulfill their missions. Volunteerism is an essential community value; without volunteers, many community services upon which we depend could cease to exist.

Recognizing the value of volunteers, Canada has designated April 18 – 24 as National Volunteer Week, an annual celebration in honour of the over 12.5 million Canadians who donate time, skills, and energy towards the benefit of the greater community.

“Across the province, almost 1.5 million Albertans are volunteering, providing the non-profit sector with a powerful resource that helps thousands of organizations meet the needs of the community,” says Benson.

Minister Lindsay Blackett has prepared a special video message in honour of National Volunteer Week and the thousands of dedicated and caring volunteers in the province.

In Calgary, Mayor Dave Bronconnier has also issued an official proclamation supporting this nationwide initiative and declaring April 18 – 24, 2010 “National Volunteer Week”.

To kick off the local celebrations, Volunteer Calgary will be hosting the 14^th Annual Leadership Awards, the premier volunteer recognition event in Calgary on April 19. The gala puts a spotlight on outstanding local volunteers in categories of youth, animal, family, business, and individual volunteers.

There are many ways National Volunteer Week can be celebrated. Volunteer Calgary will be displaying banners promoting volunteerism over select thoroughfares. Throughout the week, Volunteer Alberta will be promoting “Volunteers Count” initiative to count volunteer hours, encouraging volunteers to record their volunteering hours online. During NVW, non-profit organizations and businesses are encouraged to acknowledge the efforts of volunteers. All Calgarians are encouraged to say “thank you” to the thousands of volunteers in our city who have made a positive difference in the community. He left his job as a stockbroker in order to establish the Fig Tree Foundation, a Calgary-based organization dedicated to helping disadvantaged populations around the world by fostering collaboration between and raising funds for, registered international development organizations.

Paul is dedicated to his great vision of helping people around the world and works tirelessly to bring about a positive change. He has committed thousands of volunteer hours to the Fig Tree Foundation. He is actively involved in all aspects of the organization, tirelessly spearheading projects, events, and initiatives.

In the Nominee Announcement Event held today at the Cardel Theatre, all nominees for the 14th Annual Leadership Awards took center stage. The event provided an opportunity for volunteers, their nominators, and members of the community to take a moment to appreciate the importance of volunteers’ contributions to our communities.

This year, 130 nominations were received by Volunteer Calgary across eight categories: Heart of Calgary, Leaders of Tomorrow, Leaders in Employee Volunteering, Leader in Volunteer Management, Leader in Volunteer Engagement, Volunteer Family, Volunteer in Profile, and Volunteer Animal. The nominees represent the commitment, passion and diversity of the thousands of volunteers in Calgary who more often than not go unacknowledged.

Dale began volunteering for CNIB 14 years ago where he is committed to its mission of helping people with vision loss. The Canadian Institute for the Blind (CNIB) provides many programs and services for children and adults with vision loss.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.

This Calgary event is called TEDxCalgary, where x=independently organized TED event. At the Calgary event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including Calgar, are self-organized. DECEMBER 5, 2009 - International Volunteer Day (IVD) offers an opportunity to show appreciation for all the volunteers who dedicate time and skills to communities the world over. It is also a venue to showcase the contribution of volunteers to society and encourage more people to volunteer.

IVD was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985 and is now celebrated worldwide with thousands of volunteers involved. IVD initiatives come in all shapes and forms – from volunteer recognition events and afternoon teas to park clean-ups and tree planting – all aimed at highlighting the importance of volunteers in communities around the globe.

Volunteer Calgary supports IVD and encourages all non-profit and voluntary organizations to participate in the worldwide celebration of volunteers. Below are some ways to help you get ready for IVD. If you have any ideas you would like to share, drop us an email with your suggestions.

Santa’s Secret Service was founded in 1985 and is a registered Charity with a mission to enhance the quality of life for isolated seniors. It all started when one Calgary citizen purchased gifts for 10 isolated seniors at Christmas. Today up to 2500 isolated seniors are served by Santa’s each year. About 2.5 years ago John Labun has been a volunteer with Aspen Family Services for close to 2.5 years. He has logged countless volunteer hours to bring new and wonderful ideas and experiences to Aspen youth and even staff. John met with our volunteer coordinator in the beginning of 2008. He was looking to “give back” in some way that was meaningful, unique and allow him the opportunity to be involved with youth. After meeting with John it was quickly apparent that this was a man with a huge heart and some amazing ideas on how to support Aspen in engaging and having fun with youth. Wes Harper has been in his volunteer role for the 16 months and has given over 250 hours of his individual time towards the needs of others who visit the Mustard Seed for support and guidance. As a volunteer, Wes has grown in tremendous ways. He initially started out with the Basic Services program where he helped to serve meals and worked in the clothing shop. Over time, he has learned the ins and outs of the organization and is currently being trained to deal with case management issues where he will work directly with guests to help them reach their goals. Those who work in the IT world know that it can be quite challenging and sometimes very stressful. In the non-profit sector where tight budgets and a lack of resources are often the norm it can be even harder to maneuver your way through the IT world of IE8, SSL-VPN, CRM and VoIP.

Well, you are not alone. The IT staff from Volunteer Calgary, IT Focus Solution, and CentrePoint are putting together an informal network of local non-profit employees, volunteers and other individuals who are directly or indirectly responsible for supporting and developing the IT departments within their organizations.

If you are eager to learn and share knowledge with other IT colleagues, we want to hear from you. This network will be involved in regular meetings and online discussion around some of the leading edge technologies that are shaping the non-profit sector right here in Calgary.

This is your chance to learn more about the technology that is out there and share some of the simple, and not so simple, ideas and techniques that others have used to improve the IT in their organizations.

Dale became a volunteer with the Ronald McDonald House Southern Alberta 2 ½ years ago, and has contributed well over 500 hours to the organization. Dale’s main responsibilities are at the RMH Front desk/reception area as the pleasant and warm person that welcomes new families into RMH. She brings with her an “instant support, comfort and genuine compassion to the families in incredibly trying circumstances” says Kristy, her volunteer coordinator. Ruth says “time flies when you’re having fun” and there is never a dull moment in Ruth’s life, especially during the festival. Over the past 22 years, there isn’t a volunteer role that she hasn’t done before. From face painting, to supervising, and everything in between, Ruth has played a part in the festival. Volunteers provide services to the community

Celebrate National Volunteer Week: April 19- 25, 2009

Abused women, hungry schoolchildren, homeless families, cancer patients, troubled teens, abandoned kittens -- these are only a few of the thousands of Calgarians that depend on the tireless dedication of volunteers everyday. Volunteerism is an essential community value and volunteers are priceless resources that provide valuable services to the community. Without volunteers, these services may not be able to exist.

In recognition of this, Canada has designated National Volunteer Week as an annual celebration in honour of over ten million Canadians who donate time, skills, and energy towards the benefit of the greater community. In the City of Calgary, Mayor Dave Bronconnier has issued an official mayor's proclamation declaring the week of April 19 – 25, 2009 “National Volunteer Week.”

In times of economic uncertainty, the need for volunteers is stronger than ever. In Alberta, there are over 19,000 non-profit/voluntary sector, over half of which are entirely run by volunteers. In Calgary alone, there are over 5,000 non-profit organizations, most of which work with volunteers to fulfill their missions.

“Volunteers provide the non-profit sector with a powerful resource allowing organizations to meet the needs of the community,” says Laurel Benson, President & CEO of Volunteer Calgary. “This is especially true during challenging economic times when the demands increase but the availability for additional funding decreases for many of our non-profit member organizations.”

Calgary has been fortunate for its abundance of willing volunteers that respond to this need. In 2005, Calgary was dubbed “Volunteer Capital of Canada” following an Ipsos-Reid survey concluding that it had the highest volunteering rates in the country at 71% as compared with the 27 % national average.

To kick off the celebrations in Calgary, Volunteer Calgary hosted the Annual Leadership Awards on April 16, 2009 at the Calgary Stampede, putting a spotlight on outstanding local volunteers in categories of youth, animal, family, business, and individual volunteers.

During National Volunteer Week, non-profit organizations and businesses hold volunteer appreciation events throughout the city as a way to thank their volunteers. Calgarians are highly encouraged to participate in local celebrations that show pride and appreciation for volunteers or to take a moment to say “thank you” to the people who have made a positive difference in the community or in their own lives.

Volunteer Calgary’s Annual Leadership Awards Recipients Announced

(Calgary, AB – April 16, 2009) On the evening of the 16th of April 2009, Volunteer Calgary announced the recipients of the annual Leadership Awards during the city’s premier volunteer recognition event in honour of outstanding local volunteers. The 13th Annual Volunteer Calgary Leadership Awards was the culmination of a year-long nomination process and was the launch of the National Volunteer Week (April 19 – 25) celebrations in Calgary.

Volunteer Calgary calls on Calgarians to nominate exceptional volunteers in a variety of categories every year. The nominees highlight the diversity of Calgarians who volunteer, including youth, businesses, families and even animals, representing thousands of volunteers in our community who often go unrecognized. This year, a total of 117 nominations were received from which the eight award recipients were selected.

The awards gala to announce the award recipients was held at the Calgary Stampede Palomino room. Despite the economic turbulence, approximately 450 people attended the event, which was a show of the community’s unwavering support of volunteerism. Strong support from the corporate sector was seen through their attendance as well as the continuous patronage of awards sponsors, both longstanding and new.

“Suncor Energy is proud to support the recognition of volunteers who demonstrate leadership by giving their time and expertise to build better organizations and vibrant, healthy communities,” says Ashley Cormier, Community Investment Advisor with Suncor Energy Foundation. Suncor Energy has been the presenting sponsor for the Leadership Awards for the last decade.

The evening celebration was filled with inspiration at videos showcasing volunteerism in the community, the formal awards ceremony acknowledging the outstanding volunteers. It was also an opportunity to mingle with fellow volunteers and members of the community to celebrate volunteerism.

"The Annual Leadership Awards celebrate not only the outstanding achievements of the Award winners, but also serve to recognize the important contributions made by volunteers in our community make each and every day. By sharing the many inspirational stories of volunteerism demonstrated by the Award recipients, we hope to inspire others to take an active role in our community by becoming volunteers themselves," says Laurel Benson, President and CEO of Volunteer Calgary.

The winners this year are as follows: Jim Gray for the Heart of Calgary Award; Tina Barzo for the Leadership in Volunteer Management Award; Megan Davidson, Sabrina Poonja and Eden Full for the Leaders of Tomorrow Awards; Fluor Canada Ltd., Stikeman Elliott LLP, and Bowen Workforce Solutions for the Leaders in Business Awards; Athletes Mentoring Program for the Outstanding Volunteer Program Award; Cynthia Zuidema for the Volunteer in Profile Award; the Moldon family for the Volunteer Family Award; and finally, Jet the Cat for the Volunteer Animal Award.

Volunteer Calgary has played a key role in the development and promotion of volunteerism in Calgary for over 50 years. NEW PROGRAM TO COVER COSTS OF POLICE INFORMATION CHECKS

Edmonton, Alberta – April 8, 2009

The Volunteer Police Information Check Program was announced this afternoon by the Government of Alberta. This new, three-year pilot program will cover the costs of police information checks (PICs) for eligible volunteers in nonprofit/voluntary sector organizations.

This is a much needed win for the nonprofit/voluntary sector! Our sector has regularly expressed concerns about the burden of PIC costs. This new program responds directly to those concerns.

Volunteer Alberta worked with the Alberta government and its Wild Rose Foundation and the Ministry of the Solicitor General and Public Security to create the Volunteer Police Information Check Program. Volunteer Alberta will act as Administrator of the program. Funding for the program is provided by Alberta Culture and Community Spirit, through the Safe Communities Secretariat.

Volunteer in Profile for March 2009 - Rosemary Clysdale

Rosemary Clysdale has been familiar with Heritage Park since she moved with her family to Calgary in 1981. They originally purchased a season’s pass and visited the park on a regular basis. For her, the park began to bring back many warm memories from her childhood growing up in Ontario. She shares in a unique appreciation of history and the lessons that we can learn from the past.

In 1991 Rosemary felt that she had the time and the passion to contribute back to the park so she became a volunteer. Rosemary is definitely “no stranger” around the park as she is involved in many of the activities and operations. She has “done it all” from sewing the period costumes, greeting guests, working as a cashier, and assisting in the Funding and Heirloom programmes.

Calgary Salutes Volunteers

Volunteer Calgary is proud to announce the 2009 list of nominees for the 13th Annual Leadership Awards. Each year, these awards have put the spotlight on a few of the thousands of hard working volunteers who support and strengthen our city.

Despite the current economic downturn, 117 nominations were received by Volunteer Calgary. These nominations highlight the diversity of Calgarians who volunteer, including youth, businesses, families and even animals, representing thousands of volunteers in our community who often go unrecognized.

“It is truly humbling to see the accomplishments of these nominees. They give freely of their time and expertise in all areas of our community, often without fanfare or any public acknowledgement. It is no wonder that Calgary remains unchallenged as the “Volunteer Capital of Canada,” says Benson.

This unofficial title was declared back in 2005 when an Ipsos-Reid survey concluded that 71% of Calgarians were participating in some form of volunteering, donating on average of 15 hours of their time per month; statistics that exceed both the national and provincial averages for volunteering.

From the 117 nominees announced today, the final 12 award recipients will be announced on the evening of April 16th during the 13th Annual Leadership Awards gala at the Roundup Centre, which is hosted by Volunteer Calgary and presented by Suncor Energy. The ceremony will also kick off National Volunteer Week, which will run from April 19 - 25, 2009.

At that time, awards will be presented in eight categories including Heart of Calgary, Volunteer Family, Leaders in Business, Leaders of Tomorrow, Leadership in Volunteer Management, Outstanding Volunteer Program, Volunteer Animal and Volunteer in Profile.

Tickets for the gala are $75.00 for Volunteer Calgary non-profit member organizations and $150.00 for the public, proceeds of which will be used to deliver programs and services that support Volunteer Calgary’s mission of engaging more people, more effectively to volunteer.

Benson hopes that by honouring the city’s outstanding volunteers, more people will be inspired to become involved in building a stronger and more caring community.

Volunteer Involvement and Economic Uncertainty

We all know that oil prices are slumping, the dollar is soft and layoffs both real and rumoured are striking fear in the hearts of Canadians everywhere. No where are the implications of this economic downturn more evident than in volunteer-driven organizations and the non-profit sector in general.

The deepening financial crisis means an increased demand will strain the services provided to vulnerable populations by our organizations and reduced funding and declining endowment funds will stretch the sector to its breaking point as we all work to do more with less.

Many hoped the 2009 federal budget would recognize the value of the sector at this critical time and come through with stimulus plan or tax incentives to help support the sector but as is often the case the reality did not live up to the hype or the hope.

That is not to say all is doom and gloom. History has shown us that during times of crisis, charitable organizations are the ones that step forward to rally the public, recruit the volunteers and provide the determination to overcome the obstacles of crisis and provide the services and strength at the heart of our civil society to meet the needs of our community and see it through challenging times!

Every Canadian in every community across our country is touched by the work of the non-profit sector. Despite the economic downturn, charitable and volunteer dependent agencies will continue to deliver food to seniors, pack food hampers and run shelters for the most vulnerable, provide hot lunches to children, preserve our arts and culture, speak out and take action to preserve our environment, facilitate and provide the resources necessary for critical medial research and care.

• Volunteerism is vital in helping organizations achieve their goals and have positive impact in their communities.

Carrie Mah is our Volunteer in Profile for November 2008

Carrie Mah has been volunteering with the Child and Youth Friendly Calgary organization for the last 2 years, and has put in over 530 hours of her personal time to help out where ever she is needed. In just the short time that she has been volunteering, she has been able 'to connect with people from all walks of life and has inspired her to new heights.

Janelle Beaven is our Volunteer In Profile for October 2008

Janelle Beaven has been a volunteer with LINKages for the past three years. Janelle first became interested in working with seniors at a young age, when her grandmother started taking her to a Hospice to volunteer and interact with the seniors. She heard about the LINKages program in her junior high school, and was so excited about being a part of the program, that she spent more time on the application to become a volunteer, than working on her homework. She was later accepted to the program, and was so excited about her acceptance that she ‘ran up and down the hallways’ of her school to tell all of her friends.

Fekete Paints the Town

On Saturday, August 23, 2008 a group of twenty-three Fekete employees and friends volunteered with Volunteer Calgary’s Paint the Town program. This enthusiastic group of volunteers gave of their time and energy to paint a senior’s home and make a difference in that senior’s life. The preparation work was done by the City Links crew and Fekete completed the final painting in one day of volunteering.

A special thanks to the City Links crew who identified the senior, prepped the home and who completed any required “finishing touches”. This project was able to happen through the generous funds donated by Fekete to cover the cost of the paint and the materials that went into painting the home.

On behalf of Volunteer Calgary, we would like to recognize and thank Fekete, the Fekete employees and friends for reaching out to the community through volunteering.

Petro-Canada Paints the Town

On Thursday, August 21, 2008 seventeen executives from Petro-Canada volunteered with Volunteer Calgary’s Paint the Town program. This energetic and determined group of volunteers braved the weather and gave their time and energy to paint the home of a Calgary senior. Without the support of the Petro-Canada executive team, the senior would not have been able to have her home repainted.

A special thanks to the City Links crew who identified the senior, prepped the home and who completed any required “finishing touches”. This project was able to happen through the generous funds donated by Petro-Canada to cover the cost of the paint and the materials that went into painting the home. This was Petro-Canada’s second Paint the Town sponsored project for the summer of 2008.

On behalf of Volunteer Calgary, we would like to recognize and thank Petro-Canada for reaching out to the community through volunteering.

ConocoPhillips’ Finance Department Team Paints the Town

On Tuesday, August 19, 2008 thirty-four employees from the Finance Department at ConocoPhillips volunteered with Volunteer Calgary’s Paint the Town program. This dynamic group of volunteers gave their time and energy to paint the homes of two Calgary seniors, and make a difference in those seniors’ lives. The preparation work was done by the City Links crew and ConocoPhillips completed both projects in one day of volunteering. This project was able to happen through the generous funds donated by ConocoPhillips to cover the cost of the paint and the materials that went into painting the homes. These two projects were ConocoPhillips’ second and third sponsored projects with Paint the Town for the summer of 2008.

George Jones selected as Volunteer In Profile for August 2008

George Jones has been an active volunteer with the Care Connect since 1996. This organization provides a helping hand to less fortunate and assists in the delivery of food hampers.

George has been delivering food hampers into the communities. He delivers hampers regularly for 4 days a week on average 5 hours a day.

George is a handy man with a heart of gold who is always at peoples’ service. He also volunteers with Servants Anonymous and does maintenance work for anyone who needs a hand. He also volunteers with his church’s Helping Hands program offering his handy man services as well. He used to volunteer for the Teen Line suicide Hotline for ten years.

Volunteer Management Software Demonstration - September 9, 2008

Volunteer Calgary will be hosting a demonstration of Volunteer Impact, a Canadian volunteer management software package . Tony Goodrow of Volunteer Energy will be in Calgary on September 9 at 1:00 p.m. to demonstrate Volunteer Impact and answer any questions you have about the program. The demonstration will be held in the Volunteer Calgary Boardroom.

Chevron Paints the Town

Skilled Volunteers available from Mount Royal College

Can your organization benefit from a skilled volunteer? Mount Royal students are looking for volunteer opportunities to engage with your organization in a more directive and meaningful way while contributing their valuable skills to your organization.

There are 3 projects that Mount Royal students are looking for volunteer engagement opportunities with.

Students in the ENTR 4431 Leadership Development class are looking for ways to participate in a volunteer project during the fall school term for Mount Royal College. These are students who are looking to volunteer 10 hours with a non-profit organization for this project. The timeline for this project is to start at the end of September, 2008 with a running time until November, 2008. Also, there are opportunities for projects in the winter term.
An opportunity for organizations who would like to have a student do a full term analysis around leadership and motivation (ENTR 4431)
A consulting practicum for 4th year students (ENTR 4434) where students do an organizational analysis in mid sized organizations with 10-30 employees. Students are looking for opportunities to conduct systems analysis, streamline reporting processes, and to work with long term planning and marketing/communication issues. This is a term long project, offered both in fall and winter

How the organization will benefit from a project of this nature:

an opportunity to do some capacity building and organizational assessment with Mount Royal students who will be in the workforce the following year.
Obtain reaffirmation of what your organization is doing well while identifying some potential inefficiencies in the operations and management systems. Creating a solid action plan to address the issues, processes, gaps in management and motivation, quality control, effective and ineffective communication. Best ways to work with your stake holders and clients. Conducting an evaluation with your external communications/marketing process, the website, assessing the database in relations to current FOIP practices, tracking, utilization of a short term or long term planning process and how communication happens within the community.
connecting with new ideas and building your volunteer base.

How a Mount Royal student volunteer will benefit from a project of this nature:

to facilitate the exposure of the student to a non-profit organization that they may apply theories addressed in the classroom to a new organization covering motivation, leadership styles, and organization processes.
to provide life exposure to a broader range of organizations than the student may or not be currently be familiar with.
to encourage the student to give back to the community, while gaining volunteer experience.
